We have become increasingly concerned about, largely, unregulated claims firms who aggressively target vulnerable residents. We understand that as a result of cold calling, tenants are being enticed by the promise of “no win - no fee” to gain entry to the home.
These companies operate by cold calling, leaflets and social media to encourage tenants to pursue claims against their landlord for disrepair.
We would urge tenants to be cautious if they are approached by any of these firms making promises which are often too good to be true. Please seek advice from a genuine solicitor before signing any documents.
We believe that many of these firms are unscrupulous and do not have a tenant’s best financial or health interests at heart and will often advise tenants to refuse access for repairs. In many cases, tenants may be liable to pay court costs even if on a ‘no-win, no fee basis’. Please be aware that these organisations are not working for or on behalf of BCH or Blackpool Council.
In some cases, claim firms have been canvassing in local areas and are not always clear about who they are. If you are in any doubt about who you are speaking to, please don’t respond and contact us directly. Remember, all BCH staff and approved contractors will always make a pre-arranged appointment with you, and will always be wearing identification badges.
Report any incidents of cold calling to Trading Standards on 01253 478375. You can also request a ‘No Cold Calling’ pack, including a no cold-calling sticker, Safe and Secure directory and information leaflets you can distribute to your friends or neighbours.
