Keeping you safe - utility meter tampering danger

Last updated: 20 September 2022

Energy theft is not only a breach of your tenancy, but also illegal and incredibly dangerous, increasing the potential for shocks, severe burns and electrical fires.

40% of house fires are caused by electrical appliances and supply so it is important to stay safe. Tampering with and wiring your meter to save money significantly increases the risk of an electrical fire. You not only put your own life in danger, but your family and neighbours too.

You should never tamper with the utility meters in your home; if you believe there is a fault or problem with your meter, you should report this immediately to your utility supplier.

Risks

  • Shocks and severe burns - messing with the wiring on a meter could make switches or appliances 'live' to the touch or make them overheat/malfunction. This risks shocks and severe burns to anyone using the appliances.
  • Fires - wires with loose connections can get so hot that they start fires. Damaging the gas supply risks dangerous leaks which can be easily ignited.
  • Explosions - if large amounts of gas escape from a tampered meter, it can build up throughout the property and cause a devastating explosion.
  • Tenancy action and prosecution - our Neighbourhoods Team carry out regular inspections; if you are found to have altered any meter within your property, this is a breach of your tenancy and will result in legal action being taken. You may also face further action from your utility supplier, resulting in criminal prosecution and possible imprisonment.

Help keep you, your family and community safe. You can report energy theft anonymously online through the Stay Energy Safe website or by calling 0800 023 2777.
