Disabled facilities adaptations

These are small works (usually under £1000 in value) and may include adaptations to external steps or landings, grab rail/s in and around the property, stair rails, door widening or lowering work surfaces.

This type of work is normally completed within 5-10 working days and requires a referral from Adult Social Care or an Occupational Therapist. Please speak to your GP or Social Worker to discuss a referral.

Classed as large scale works, major adaptations include items such as level access showers, stair lifts or ramps.

We can help customers in all tenures: tenants of Blackpool Coastal Housing, Private Rented or Housing Association properties and Owner Occupier residents.

An assessment of need will first be carried out by an Occupational Therapist or other qualified person who may make a recommendation for an adaptation. The works must be necessary, appropriate, reasonable and practicable.

Disabled Facilities Grants (DFG) are available towards the cost of providing major adaptations subject to eligibility criteria. This is a means tested grant and you may have to pay a contribution depending upon your financial circumstances. The consent of the homeowner will also be required if you are not an owner occupier.

For social housing tenants, a separate grant is available which is not means tested and permission is required by BCH to undertake the recommended works. The Adaptations Team will support you through the process of applying for the grant and carrying out the works.
