Don't get into debt this Christmas

Blackpool Coastal Housing

Christmas is fast approaching and presents, decorations, food and nights out are all part of the festive fun but the costs can soon add up. Remember to prioritise your money - rent payments must still be made before, during and after the festive period so that you don't go into the New Year with arrears.

By following some of our top tips, you can avoid getting into debt this Christmas and start the New Year stress free:

  • Continue to pay your priority bills first - this includes rent, gas, electricity, water and Council tax. It is a condition of your tenancy that your rent is paid in advance and in full at all times.

  • Don't rely on an overdraft or loan to pay for Christmas - stick to a budget you can afford - write down who you have to buy for, how much you can afford to spend on each person and buy presents within that limit.

  • Make a Festive Food shopping list to make sure you know exactly what you need and aren't tempted by other goods instore.

  • Notify relevant authorities if your circumstances change - contact the Department of Work and Pensions and/or Housing Benefit as soon as any of your circumstances change as this could affect your benefit entitlement.

  • Shop around to find the best deals - use online comparison sites and look out for retailers who have special offers that you can take advantage of.

  • Be creative - making your own gifts will provide a personal touch and will cost a lot less.

  • Start saving early for next year - by putting a little away each week or month, you will soon have a pot of money to help make next Christmas more affordable.

Enjoy your Christmas with people you care about, fun and laughter is free!
