How Do I End My Tenancy?
If you want to end your tenancy, you must give us 4 weeks written notice. You must complete a Termination Notice and can find a copy of this by clicking on the link to
Forms
and selecting 'Termination Notice'. You can also pick one up from your local Housing Office. Ask for help if you need any assistance in completing this form or if you need its content explaining to you further.
If you are joint tenants, any one of you can end the tenancy as above. We will decide if any of the other joint tenants can remain at the property.
Before you leave, we will inspect your property. We therefore request that you make an appointment for this Inspection in the weeks leading up to the date you are leaving. You can make this appointment by contacting the
HOMESTOP
team. At this Inspection we will advise you of any damage to your property that will need to be put right before you leave or any alterations carried out with or without permission which you will need to reinstate. If you do not carry out the works as requested, and Blackpool Coastal Housing has to carry out these works as a result, you will be held responsible for the costs of such works. Please see section on recharges below.
Before leaving your property you must ensure that:
You pay all rent and charges up to the date of the end of your tenancy
You leave the property, fixtures and fittings and any furnishings we have provided in good condition
You leave the property clean and tidy and remove all possessions and any rubbish from both inside AND outside the property. You will be charged for the cost of cleaning and clearing the property if you do not
You remove any greenhouse, garage or shed you have put in the garden (if applicable). You will be charged for the cost of dismantling, removing and disposing of any structure if you do not.
You have informed the utility companies(gas, water, electric) you are moving and on what date - and that you have taken accurate meter readings for this purpose
You have advised the Council’s Revenues section (Council Tax/Housing Benefit) and the Department of Work and Pensions (if applicable) of your move & of your forwarding address
You have arranged with the Post Office to have your mail redirected
Your property is vacant with no one left in occupation. If you do leave anyone in the property we will take action to evict them as they will be living there illegally without our permission
Handing in the Keys
Keys can be handed in to any Housing Office. You will be required to give us a forwarding address and contact telephone number if applicable. The keys should be handed in to us before 12 midday on the Monday your Termination Notice expires - this date appears at the top of the notice itself. Failure to do so may result in you being charged further weeks' rent. In addition, If we have to change the locks to your property you will also be charged for the cost of doing so.
Recharges
You will be recharged for any damage that has been caused. You will be recharged for any rubbish or unwanted belongings you leave behind. If you have carried out alterations without permission and the property has to be reinstated, you will also be recharged for these works.
Outstanding Debts
If you owe us any money for rent or other charges when you leave the property, you must make arrangements with us to pay this debt. A payment arrangement can be made by contacting our
Former Tenant Arrears
section.
If you re-apply for housing with us, you will not normally be considered or receive any offers of accommodation until you have demonstrated a commitment to paying off these debts.
