Abandoned Properties

We realise that sometimes our tenants may leave their properties without telling us they are going. This means that we can have an empty property in an area that we are unaware of and that we could be letting to someone on our waiting list. Such properties can then attract vandalism or squatters.

We appreciate that it is often the neighbours that are the first to know.  If you are aware of a property in your area that is empty, and you think it may have been abandoned please contact your local housing office.

If the tenant is not there, we can take action to regain possession of the property and let it to someone else. We will investigate all reports of abandonment within one working day of receiving the information.

You can speak to someone in confidence in office hours or leave a message out of office hours on the answering machine service at any of our Housing Offices.

Unlawful Occupation

Sometimes people move into a property but they should not be living there. They may see an empty property and move in. This is called ’illegal occupation’ or sometimes ’squatting’.

It is also possible that the tenant has moved out and are sub-letting the property to someone else. This is a property that we can re-let to someone who is waiting for a home.

We will investigate any instances of illegal occupation and commence any necessary legal action to remove any illegal occupiers from our properties.  You can help by reporting any instances to your local housing office.

You can speak to someone in confidence during office hours or leave a message out of office hours on our answering machine service at any of our local housing offices.  You do not have to leave your name or contact details, though if you do we may have other questions about the situation that you can help us with. In any case, your details and contact with us will be confidential  If you wish to email us the details - please contact us at yourtenancy@bch.co.uk..

Abandoned Vehicles

It is sometimes the case that a vehicle is seen to have been abandoned in an area.  We are aware that such abandoned vehicles can be detrimental to the appearance of an area or estate and so we would ask that they are reported to us immediately.  This would then:
  •  Ensure that the estate/area is safe and free from hazards
  •  Ensure that the appearance of the estate/area is kept to a high standard
  •  Ensure that abandoned vehicles do not create nuisance for residents or visitors to the estate

If you are aware that a vehicle has been abandoned in your area, please contact your local Housing Office

It would be particularly useful if you could inspect the vehicle noting the location, make, model, colour, registration number and details of any tax disc.  This can only assist us in investigating and resolving the matter more quickly.  Please note, if the vehicle is on 'highways land' we will refer this to the Police to investigate further.
