False claims tackled by Statement of Truth |
Blackpool Coastal Housing, in partnership with BSafe Blackpool, is implementing a Statement of Truth programme to tackle the number of tenants causing damage to BCH properties.
In response to an analysis of the criminal damage figures in the Blackpool coastal Housing properties it was discovered that an unusual amount of incidents of damage were taking place. It was suggested that some of the damage may have been caused deliberately in order to claim for repairs and get new fixtures and fittings.
Peter Jefferson, Chief Executive of Blackpool Coastal Housing, said: “false reporting of criminal damage is costing us money that has to be recouped somehow. The Statement of Truth will be sent out on receipt of a call reporting damage – if it is not signed and returned the tenant will be recharged automatically, regardless of whether they have provided a police log number over the telephone. Hopefully this will discourage people from making fraudulent claims”
Housing and Estate Management Officers are informed of the damage and will investigate in partnership with the police. If a tenant has signed the SOT but it is found that the tenant has caused damage to their own property then legal proceedings will be instigated against them.
The SOT was piloted in Wales and found to be incredibly effective in deterring those tenants, who have caused the damage themselves, from making false claims in order to have the repairs carried out for free.
Cllr Roy Haskett, Cabinet Assistant for Communities and Culture in Blackpool Council, said: “Unfortunately we have recently been made aware, in certain cases, that people are falsely reporting crimes, in order to claim for repairs from their housing provider. In these instances, it's bound to have a very negative impact on the figures we are often judged by. I say this, as they paint a very unrealistic picture about the amount of criminal damage we actually have in our town. This scheme has already been very successful in certain pilot areas and I hope it will act as a deterrent here in Blackpool too.”
